Elmer's Restaurant reviews

We stopped here on our way out of Portland on a Sunday morning. It was packed, and we heard that they were short staffed wait-staff wise and in the kitchen. Despite this, we got some great service. The wait wasn't more than 15 minutes to get in. Through our meal, multiple staff members checked on us for water refills, coffee refills, and to see if we needed anything in general.

The food hit the spot, I had a farmers omelette with loaded hash browns. I would recommend the farmers omelette, but maybe not the loaded hash browns. The omelette was cooked perfectly, with some leftover gravy that I used for the biscuit. Just enough veggies and meats on the inside too! My hash browns were overcooked, with some parts of it completely charred. However, my friends ordered plain hash browns and they came out perfectly, so it could have just been the ingredients in the loaded hash browns that caused issues (green onions, bacon, sour cream, etc).

When we went to get our check, we asked for it to be split, and it was not. They were busy, and it was understandable, but we did make it clear what our intentions were. Hence why they're missing one star.

Overall, a great experience. If I find myself in the area again, I would certainly return for breakfast!

When I have the option, and those times are less and less these days, my daughter and I love to frequent Elmers for a brunch of sorts. She always orders the same thing of the kids menu, but I have tried darn near every breakfast itme they have and haven't been disappointed yet. The German Pancake isn't as tradtional as a true "Dutch Baby" but it still tastes good as do their crepes (my favorite) waffles, french toast, and so on.

Staff is always super friendly, I always give them a decent tip because they work hard to earn it.

We love Elmer's. One of our 1st stops when visiting Portland area from Eastern Washington. My parents started taking us to Elmer's when I was little. Our 2 boys grew up coming to Elmer's, now waiting to be a Grandma & start another generation of Elmer's fans.
95% of my visits to Elmer's I order German Pancakes my favorite.

By Gina B. at 2016-06-27

I'll start with saying our waitress was very nice and attentive. But when our food came, my German pancake was half burned which she noticed. She asked if I wanted her to get them to cook me another one(which was a nice thought) and I really didn't, the food shouldn't have come out looking that way in the first place. I'd rather have her tell me there was a small issue in the kitchen and your pancake is on its way then have a burned pancake. And I never send food back, I know what that can start!
We were seated right next to the restroom and every time the door opened I could smell it, so I just wanted to get out of there, honestly.

We come for a German pancake here and there but this is our last time there. It was disappointing.

Been a Gresham staple for decades. Always consistent and good. I love the farmers omelet and good selection to choose from. Definitely a reason it's always a busy breakfast and lunch spot. Great drinks in the lounge also

My experience here was positive and my first time into Gresham in over 20+ years?; My ex-coworkers [now Retired] meet here for Breakfast and chatter on the 3rd Tuesday morning every month; I must admit it was somewhat of a Drive to get here? But the Breakfast was very good! I ordered the Chicken fried steak with eggs and Hash-Browns, with toast, and finished off with good coffee! I still have never known why this Breakfast is named Chicken fried steak when it's actually Beef not chicken? But oh well; one of those mystery's I suppose? My Breakfast was excellent and very tasty so that's mostly what I care about anyway! I will come again sometime whenever I get the time to get away and get to Gresham again.

This is an update to a previous review:

We went there this morning and it was busy, but the service was great! Everyone was friendly and efficient. The food was delicious too and this experience really made up for any bad ones. Definitely will continue to give them business!

Previous review:

Normally have a decent experience- this review is based solely on today's visit

Walked in and the girl at the entry turns to her co worker and said-do you got them? Not too bad, but add the annoyed tone to it and it was rude

Got seated, already know what we wanted so ordered right away.
Next- a bunch of drama and employees looking stressed, managers looking upset etc. from what we could gather- a group got seated and forgot about by the employees,no water even, just forget about
About 20 mins later we are not sure why we haven't gotten food and keep looking towards the kitchen....we see the employees see us, go in their way...manger sees us, goes in her way. Literally sitting there staring into the kitchen- tempted to stay out of pure curiosity of how long this would take, but we didn't. We stood up, and left.
So- I don't know, it was like the third bad experience but, we have way more better experiences most the time- but this one just sucked. We were completely forgotten about and hungry, oh so hungry

Paying attention to your customers seems to work at most places, just saying

This place reminds me of a Denny's. It was clean and the service was good. It had average food with a big variety. I was hoping for something more original. I didn't realize it was a chain.

Went to Elmers today with my wife and kids and it was great! The staff is very friendly and the restaurant is clean.

I was considering putting this as four stars because the staff was AWESOME. But then I got to thinking and there was one thing that really made me uncomfortable. So we will start with that. The tables/ chairs are too close. When we arrived and when we left we had to squeeze between chairs. It was really awkward and I don't enjoy having to invade other people's space just to move around. I can only imagine how much of a hassle that is for the wait staff too. That's the only thing I can think of that was not so good during our experience. I like that they have their food locally sourced. As far as American food goes, this is totally American. Their prices are really great. I ordered a great deal of food and my portion was only like twelve dollars. This won't be a place I will frequent because I don't usually go out to eat American food. But this is a nice place to go if you're feeling lazy and don't want to cook breakfast.

Great service, good food at fair price! Maybe could use a little updating to entry flooring and seating? But hey their busy so what the hell!!

By Amy G. at 2015-10-26

Hate to rate them so low but, the girl at the front desk Hispanic girl was rude and kept starring over at us, our food was either burnt or undercooked biscuit was doughy in the middle I asked for medium over eggs and they were way undercooked, my boyfriend ham was burnt, his potato pancakes were way over cooked. Didn't finish our food, our waiter was super nice though.

I was quite happy with this place. I had the eggs Benedict and it was really good. Service was great even though they were busy.

We were there yesterday after reading earlier very good reviews and decided to take a chance and drive out there. Bad decision. I had the $11.50 Reuben sandwich which was lukewarm at best. Rye bread barely toasted and soggy from the mass of wet sauerkraut inside. No garnish on the plate just fries..no pickle, nothing else for that price.
My sons cheeseburger was also below par with just about 11 fries, no mustard or ketchup on the burger and not even on the tables.
I did complain and got my meal (mostly not eaten) gratis but we won't be back. The staff was nice enough though but you can find that at many other places along with delicious food.

We booked a reservation for a group party at this specific Elmer's. We thought it would be a great idea and give this place a try. Unfortunately, it did not turn out the way we were expecting. Number one issue was how the staff treated us on the day of. Meals were served late, were told one thing and then another. Poor customer service and communication. If we were only treated well as customers, our experience and this review might have been different. It's unfortunate, but we would rather go somewhere else the next time we are in the area than be treated that way ever again!

I was in Portland for a Rainshadow Running race. Always looking for a good breakfast the morning after a race. Elmers selection was great, had the "Looking for the sun" omelet, was really tasty. The coffee was good to, after drinking airport coffee, this was a very welcomed cup of joe. Service was great and very friendly. Check Elmers out if you are in the Troutdale area.

I come in here at least once a week with my ol man and I love it. Service is always good and everyone is always so friendly. Definitely got that home style feeling as opposed to a generic breakfast joint. They stay pretty busy too and I notice there are regulars that come in so they are doing something right!

By Sea Turtle M. at 2016-07-24

A local chain like ihop but I guess it still maintains its touch. German pancakes were great - make sure you squeeze those lemon wedges for that extra tasty bite. Other items were ok and wait time a bit longer than typical.

So dying for breakfast. We re from Washington. Stop by here to hang out be friends. Looking for breakfast. I give this 5 stars because it taste so yummy. Would come back next time.

By Nory B. at 2014-09-29

Has a diner-like feel inside, and the service is quick, solicitous and friendly. Coffee and water are served immediately, and our order was taken within 5 min of being seated.
I had the veggie omelet with egg whites only--it was perfectly cooked, light and delicious. Good ratio of veggies to egg, and the veggies were sautéed separately from the egg. And they didn't charge extra for whites only!
My husband had the apple baby--crisp a and light and flavorful.
The restroom was really clean and modern also.
I'll definitely be back!
