Thanks for making my first kokonut grill experience so incredibly delightful! The food is freshly cooked, portions are extremely friendly, and the staff exemplifies Southern hospitality.
I tried the kokonut box with chicken katsu, coconut rice, Mac salad and egg roll. Chicken was crispy and fresh, coconut rice with a hint of coconut and Mac salad is light and cool, complementing the other hot dishes. I haven't tasted food this good in Richmond in a long time.
On your way out, remember to wave good bye to Tom and his amazing staff. 5/5

I came here for the first time with my friend and boyfriend. I ordered the chicken katsu with coconut rice, my boyfriend got the grilled beef (I think that's what it's called?), and my friend got the sweet chili shrimp. I also ordered the boba and my friend got some canned juice.
The boba was just okay, but my friend's juice was good. All 3 of our foods were pretty good. The shrimp and the coconut rice was my favorite part. The macaroni salad was almost as good as my favorite one. We all enjoyed our meals!
I would definitely recommend and will be back if I'm in the area.

So many high reviews? Why !? Anyone?!
1st time here, went with the Kokonut Box which included:
*A nice sized portion of Spicy Grilled Chicken
*Four Sweet Chili Shrimp ( $2.00 extra)
*2 scoops of "ehh" Coconut Rice ( No Flavor)
*1 scoop of Bland Macaroni Salad
*1 Small juicy slice of Pineapple
My Girlfriend also went with a box but with Spicy Grilled Tofu & Curry Shrimp.
Complete waste of money if you ask me. I was expecting sooooo much more based on word of mouth, pictures, & the reviews here on yelp! Not much taste, not enough food.
Word of advice , try out Hibachi Box near by, much more flavor and bang for your buck.

Delicious, affordable, friendly, ethnic, fresh food, big room suitable for groups, great for takeaway!

Kokonut Grill has never failed me.
Today I came in to get lunch with my friends before class at around 11:20. I felt bad when I realized they don't even open until 11:30, but they still took our orders.
The owner is always so nice and even though we came in ten minutes prior to opening, he gave us a complementary order of their Veggie Rolls (which are very yummy).
I wasn't too hungry today so I got the Chicken Satay appetizer instead of a Koko Box, though I think the Satay could suffice as a meal in itself as the portion is pretty generous - five skewers!
I also tried their Matcha Bubble Tea for the first time and it was good, not too sweet like some places make it. It's also vegan which I find pretty appealing since too much dairy can be harsh on my stomach.
Aside from their Chicken Satay, my favorites are the Garlic Shrimp and Grilled Chicken with Coconut Rice, though you can't really go wrong with anything you order.
Kokonut Grill is definitely one of my favorite places to eat in the area. Service is wonderful and the food is delicious and really beautiful to look at. If you haven't been yet, you're missing out!

It was so yummy! I got the grilled sweet chili chicken and they wrote a cute thank you note on the container. Food portion is good. I am completely full and still have a lot left for later:)!
Good price and good quality food.

A pretty good place around VCU campus. A coworker suggested it and wanted to give it a try. Place is clean and adorbs. Plenty of seats.
We parked and got our food and they were pretty fast with it. (We got our orders to go.) I ended up getting the half kokonut order of the spice beef, kokonut rice, a scoop of macaroni noodles, and an order of veggie eggrolls.
Eggrolls were pretty good. It was crunchy on the outside and soft in the inside, the sauce that it came with was pretty great too! The rice was delish and on point and the spicy beef was seasoned nicely and had the right amount of spice. The noodles were good too, good food combo. I would def go again for lunch and the location is adorbs.

Simply satisfying. Kokonut grill provides super fast, casual dining with varying options of malaysian and pacific asian fusion food. Located near VCU's college campus, this place provides cheap college eats. Definitely give this place a try and you might just end up being a regular ;)
You have the option of choosing between a koko box ($8.95) or a koko mini ($7.50). The only difference is in the portions of rice or protein of choice. You can choose from curry chicken to grilled tofu, so there's something for everyone. Then, if you're feeling up for it, there's appetizers, sides, AND desserts. I ordered the koko mini which came with 1 scoop of coconut rice (you can choose regular white rice), macaroni salad, and grilled sweet chili chicken. For it's price, everything was super tasty!
The service was super friendly and the ambiance was definitely casual. The owner also gave my party of 5 complimentary veggie rolls for each of us. So THANK YOU! Cheap, casual, and fun...what more could you ask!

Stopped in here for a quick bite. It's Asian fusion but it's basically Hawaiian food. Loco moco, noodles, macaroni salad and rice. They were out of beef.
Food was pretty good. Loco moco is a hamburger topped with a fried egg. Fried egg is usually runny. Mine was over-hard, not sunny side up and runny. Hamburger patty was thin and gristly.
The others in my party really enjoyed their food though-- they had tofu, chicken, and shrimp. The shrimp's peel and eat so it gets messy.

Good food. Love the coconut rice and of course the bubble tea. My dog Ralph loves the peanut pancake!!

Guy behind the counter was great, nice personality, patient when explaining the dishes and concept and appeared to be a genuinely nice guy. Food is cooked to order so there is a slight delay in receiving your food but nothing too extreme.
I wanted the grilled beef but unfortunately they were out of it, the guy behind the counter recommended the Loco Moco, apparently the island special, a bun-less burger topped with fried egg and teriyaki sauce with two sides of rice and one of macaroni salad. This item was good but not great, at first when trying the burger I was a bit disappointed as alone it doesn't contain a great deal of flavor but once I got a hit of the sauce in my next bite I was more into, the sauce is flavorful and is the real highlight of the dish. Not too much too say about the rice, it was well cooked and a nice add on but as with most plates of white rice, just a nice extra and nothing special. Mac salad also decent but nothing out of this world.
I would be interested in trying some of their other options but my first trip didn't blow my mind or make me wish I lived closer to make part of a regular rotation.

Incredibly friendly service, lots of street parking in the area, some seating inside. Order at the counter before sitting. Due to a recent local event, they were completely out of curry puffs as well as beef for grilled entrees. The wait for food is reasonable, as everything's cooked to order.
Veggie rolls were just okay, macaroni salad was fine. Their dried coconut isn't overly dehydrated, but the peanut butter makes the peanut pancake super rich and ideal for sharing. Loco moco didn't make me nostalgic for my Hawaii trips, but it didn't help that of the two fried eggs among our dishes, that one had been cooked through until no longer runny.
Fried noodles were super filling, had a fair amount of chicken mixed in, and a hint of tangy flavor. Bubble tea is fine: reasonably iced milk tea and properly chewy tapioca pearls. Don't miss out on their satay or the coconut rice, those totally hit the spot-- I actually enjoyed the chicken satay far more than the grilled spicy chicken entree. Garnish was all fresh: pineapple wedges were nicely ripe, shredded cabbage still crisp. I'd stop by again to check out their grilled shrimp, beef satay, and sweet yam balls.

I don't know. Everyone else including trusted yelp friends gave this place high marks. Maybe I just got a bad batch. In any event, my hubby and I ordered the crispy chicken sweet chili which was stringy and flavorless. The macaroni salad was no better than something from the grocery store and I don't mean Ukrops. The coconut rice was good but it took a full 15 minutes for our food to be ready on Tuesday at lunchtime and we were the only people in the entire restaurant. Just not getting it. Wanted to like it but didn't.

This restaurant is at the corner of the street and parking is side street. The food is more basic Malaysian food. I ordered the Shaved Iced with Toppings, replicating and influenced by Filipino Halo-Halo popular iced Desserts. Nice counter lady staff; the facility is clean and customers are young and regular to this restaurant.

Three cheers for a Hawaiian BBQ/Malaysian/fusion restaurant in RVA! I no longer have to drive to VA Beach for my mac salad fix. The owners here are super kind, and have given my friends and I egg rolls on the house while we were waiting for our orders. I've tried the shrimp (served shell-on), crispy chicken katsu, and their Malaysian bubble tea. Boy, my stomach is growling as I'm typing this up. The shrimp shells were a little bit of a nuisance but I don't mind rolling up my sleeves sometimes. Their milk tea is a little bit thicker, richer, and creamier in comparison to TT Lounge less than half a mile away.
I'm only docking one star for the portion sizes (I'd dock a half-star if I could). I'm a pretty small girl with a pretty small appetite but I wish the scoops of rice were a little bit bigger. And the next time I visit home and my friends at VCU, I will definitely try the loco moco and report back ASAP.

I came here with a friend on a weekday and we were the only people in the restaurant! That gave me plenty of time to look at all the items on the menu and see what Kokonut Grill has to offer. After staring at the menu for quite some time, the man behind the counter provided me with plenty of recommendations, which made my decision that much easier.
I decided on getting the chicken katsu plate. It came with 2 scoops of coconut rice, which, believe me, was so good and macaroni on the side. This is not mac n cheese though, it's much better. I definitely recommend getting this dish. For first timers, they give you some spring rolls and dipping sauce. How generous and inviting...:)
P.S. Try the Hawaiian Sun brand juices. They are a little pricey but different than your regular drinks.

I've been eyeing this new food spot after reading all these great reviews and decided to grab a quick bite here before catching a show at The Altria. The reviews are all true - the owner is SO nice and enthusiastically greeted me upon arrival. The menu is simple in all the best ways and everything is fresh and made-to-order.
For a full meal under $9, I definitely recommend getting a Koko Rice Box (your choice of protein, 2 scoops of coconut rice, and macaroni salad).
I got the Crispy Chicken and katsu sauce which is pounded-out chicken breast that's lightly breaded and fried - the chicken is super crispy, flavorful and it's a very generous portion.
My friend got the Koko Rice Box with Garlic Shrimp with coconut and garlic and said it was tasty but admitted it would be easier if there weren't shrimp shells; she didn't mind "working" for her food though :)
Sides were also delish! Macaroni Salad had just the right amount of dressing and is mild in flavor but the real star was the Coconut Rice = delicate, coconut-y (or should I say "kokonut-y"?) and not "sticky" at all; it really pairs well with your protein choice! Also, it comes with a slice of pineapple which was nice and sweet!
Half-way through our meal, the owner gave us some veggie spring rolls on-the-house = yum-o!
Thanks, Yelpers, for singing your praises about Kokonut Grill - I will most definitely return!

The food was great and was true to Hawaiian dishes. I got the garlic shrimp while my boyfriend got their take on a chicken katsu, but their chicken was 10x better than any Japanese katsu I've eaten.
Try their coconut rice! It's truly delicious. The service was really amazing and the lady was so sweet. She really made the experience memorable and even gave us complimentary egg rolls. I'd definitely come back again- plus if you're a VCU student it's a 5 minute walk from Mcalc & Harris Hall

Food here was different. The taste overall was sort of bland. Can't say if I would recommend this place to anyone and I doubt if I would ever eat here again. However the owner was nice and I did receive excellent customer service.

Kokonut Grill boasts cooked to order asian fusion island plate meals, authentic dessert snacks and shaved ice beverages. They definitely live up to the hype. I've been here twice and really enjoyed the food. I'm glad I was introduced to this hidden gem. The people who work here are also very sweet. Everything tastes extremely fresh and is served in an aesthetically pleasing manner. I'd definitely recommend this place.
